Sovereign Group is committed to taking all practical steps to minimise the environmental impact of its procedures at every stage, from the factory itself to materials, transport, energy management and of course recycling. For example, the Group:
Recycles 100% of aluminium removed from site and 100% of all PVC-U, glass and steel waste from the factory.
Has set a target in its Environmental Action Plan to recycle 100% of PVC-U and 80% of steel from site within five years.
Fully supports the WRAP good practice. The Waste and Resources Action Programme is a major Government programme established to promote sustainable waste management by tackling the barriers to waste minimisation and increased recycling.
Recycles or re-uses office and packaging materials wherever possible.
Uses a manufacturing plant heating system that operates on a carefully managed and monitored environmentally friendly system.
The Sovereign vehicle fleet is progressively changing to environmentally friendly fuels.
Sovereign Group is actively pursuing the BS EN ISO 14001 accreditation and has worked on a number of environmental reviews. Where appropriate Sovereign Group, encourages maintenance regimes among clients, identifying where existing frames can be given new life with the replacement of hardware, gasketry and sealed units. Where this is not appropriate, the Group aims to use one of VEKA’s associate recycling specialists.
The group’s PVC-U system supplier VEKA is the only such manufacturer in the world to have its own purpose-built, ‘closed-loop’ window recycling plant. Established in 1993 at a cost of £25 million, the VEKA Umwelttechnik factory at Behringen in Germany recycled 26,000 tonnes of PVC-U in 2004, of which 20% was from PVC-U windows. VEKA’s environmental credentials made it one of the first in the industry to earn BS EN ISO 14001. VEKA is also among the leaders in the development of material formulations supporting the Vinyl 2010 agreement towards eliminating the use of heavy metal stabilisers by the year 2010. At point of publication, some 40% of VEKA’s output uses calcium/zinc stabilisers.
